Collaboration with other organisations and networks

The unit has strong collaborative links with service providers in the different authorities in the Western Cape. This ensures that the work of the unit is anchored in current health and health care realities. The unit has provided input into health policy concerning women's health issues. Numerous collaborative links exist within South Africa with other researchers and teaching departments or institutions and organisations working in the area of women's or reproductive health. These include: the Child Health Unit and the Departments of Social Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology and Medical Microbiology at the University of Cape Town, the African Centre for Population Studies and Reproductive Health in Kwazulu-Natal; the Medical Research Council of South Africa (MRC); the Women's Health Project in the Centre for Health Policy at the University of Witwatersrand; the Reproductive Health Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Council; the Public Health Programme at University of the Western Cape and the Planned Parenthood Association of South Africa.

The unit collaborates internationally in research and teaching with a number of researchers, women's health networks and activists.

The two departments in the unit have a history of Public outreach projects. One such project is the Zibonele Public health worker project which provides preventive and promotional health services in Khayelitsha. Zibonele includes a women's health programme run by three women's wellness workers. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology established the Mid-Wives and Obstetric Units which provide Public-based maternity services.
